Programs
The NTRC offers a variety of innovative, enriching programs for youth and adults. A sampling of our programs follows:
For Youth
After School Programs: After school tutoring and enrichment programs are offered at our Northwest Tower and Homan Square sites for youth in grades K-8. After school programs incorporate computers and the Internet in completing homework, additional enrichment activities, and in creative youth projects. We strive to create a safe, supervised, positive environment for youth in the after-school hours where they can get academic assistance, pursue talents and special interests, or just "hang out" with us!
Technology Service-Learning Internships: The 13 youth interns who completed the NTRC's Digital Connectors Internship in the Summer of 2004 can attest to the fact that the NTRC is a place to learn technology, gain real-life on the job skills, and have a great time doing it. The NTRC offers technology service-learning internships to high school age youth, often times for a small stipend. Digital Connectors may help out in the NTRC office with administrative tasks, supervise youth in the after school hours, or complete special technology projects for other non-profits. Interns have worked to help build the Wireless Community Network that is growing and growing in Lawndale, and trained community members on how to us the Beehive web portal. If you need to complete service-learning hours for school, or are interested in getting your start with Information Technology, look no further!
For Adults
Whether you have never used a computer for, or are looking to expand your knowledge of Information Technology, the NTRC can help. We provide:
Basic and Advanced Computer Training Courses: Adults can take classes in everything from Intro to Computers to Advanced Excel or Microsoft Access, Digital Photography and Web-Design. Our fees are very affordable, and we offer group rates if you have a large group that would like training. Our classes are generally small and comfortable, designed to make technology "friendly" for beginners and intermediate users alike.
Small Business and Non-Profit Training: Small business financial management, business plan development, and business financing are all topics in this area. This series of workshops assist individuals and organizations with state incorporation, federal recognition of 501(c)(3) status and how to identify funding opportunities. The workshops also provide grant writing assistance, program monitoring and evaluation, and organizational development assistance.
Special Interest Clubs: The NTRC sponsors gender specific clubs for young adults between the ages of 12-19 that reflect their interests, passions, and particular needs. For example, our Hip-Hop Club provides young men the chance to share their thoughts with the world through music using multi-media computer programs and equipment, and their own creativity. The Girls Night Out Club was created at the request of our adolescent female members who wanted a private, girls only space to pursue their interests in education, computers, and fashion design, as well as sound off about the issues affecting their daily lives. All of our clubs are supervised by caring adult mentors that teach youth to use technology as a tool to express themselves while providing a supportive, safe space for personal growth.
Community Public Access
Community Public Access: You can get high-speed access at any of our sites, Monday through Friday. We are open to everyone who wants to come in and check out what we have to offer.
Wireless Community Network: In collaboration with the Center for Neighborhood Technology, the NTRC is implementing a wireless community network which will give residents of North Lawndale free to low-cost wireless high speed access. One of the first of its kind, this exciting project is growing as we speak- you can sign up at the Wireless Community Networks Website.
NTRC Business Xpress: Come to the Neighborhood Technology Resource Center for all of your business and personal print-shop needs. We provide a range of business services, from fax and copying to document creation (e.g., business cards, stationary, envelops, etc.).
